A Teacher’s Guide to African American Historic Places in South Carolina

Originally published in 2008 and revised in 2012 and 2015, A Teacher’s Guide to African American Historic Sites has been updated to the 2020 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Social Studies. All of the lessons from the previous editions are included in this edition, plus six new lessons that center around the Green Book.

Documenting Extant Green Book Sites in South Carolina

The WeGOJA Foundation is conducting a detailed survey of the extant buildings that once housed businesses listed in the Negro Motorists’ Green Book, a directory of safe places for traveling African Americans during the Jim Crow era. Roughly 200 Black-owned businesses and other institutions in South Carolina — like Ruth’s Beauty Parlor pictured above — were listed in the guide between 1939 and its final edition published in 1967.
