WeGOJA Foundation supports local community initiatives like the Union County Community Remembrance Project (UCCRP). The Union County Community Remembrance Project seeks to document and recognize the history of lynching and racial terrorism in Union County.
Our vision is to foster ongoing collaborative education, justice, and healing through preservation.
Taveau Church
Taveau Church, an emblem of the Gullah Geechee heritage, was established in 1835 by Martha Carolina Swinton Ball Taveau amidst the Cooper River Anglicans. Serving diverse congregations through tumultuous times, this antebellum church symbolizes the resilience and craftsmanship of its community, especially the enslaved Africans whose skills shaped its very structure. Despite its congregation dwindling by the early 1970s, the church's architectural simplicity and sophistication, from its Doric portico to locally-sourced lumber, reflect the profound spirit and skill of its builders.
In June 2023, the Taveau Legacy Committee, backed by ministers and congregants, took a significant step to honor this historic landmark by initiating a multi-year restoration project. This endeavor is not just about preserving a building, but reviving a space that encapsulates over 125 years of worship, community, and cultural legacy.
