The Confluence!

Register here for The Confluence, a program hosted by the WeGOJA Foundation that demonstrates how to blend education, art strategy, and South Carolina’s African American history into activities that enhance classroom instruction. The goal is to help you, as teachers, find connections between these disciplines, use creativity to shape activities around these connections, and ensure they meet curriculum standards.

In webinar sessions scheduled for February and March 2024, we will explore the art of illustrating social and political topics at the turn of the 20th century (movement, migration, World War I, women’s suffrage,) and the new art of illustrating today’s political topics (voter rights, reverse migration.) We will ask teachers to assign a defined art activity to their students based on the subjects they’re teaching in the classroom.

Some of the historic figures we'll feature include

  • the Harlem Hell Fighters and their brief training in Spartanburg, SC,

  • the Rollins sisters of Columbia, SC, who were heavily engaged in the women's suffrage movement.

Sessions will be held from 6:15-7:30 p.m. via Zoom on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 27, 28, and 29. An extra session will be held on Thursday, March 14, as a show-and-tell of the art the students created.

In addition to the webinars, teachers will receive:

  • A copy of the Green Book of South Carolina

  • A copy of the “African American Historic Places in South Carolina” guide

  • A copy of the “Teachers Guide to African American Historic Places in South Carolina”

  • A $250 stipend

We hope your time with us will be informative and enlightening, and generates new ideas for the classroom!
